film weekend

this weekend we were crazy for ip man movies. we had the dvd of ip man starring donnie yen in our home for the longest time and decided to watch it. that got us started on a spree of sorts - the legend is born: ip man, a prequel starring dennis to, was playing in the cinema so we booked tickets and watched it on saturday morning. we were on a roll really. so we bought the ip man 2 dvd and watched it on saturday evening after dinner. i loved the once upon a time in china series starring jet li, when i was younger. blending kung fu and chinese history is my kind of thing - never mind how accurate.

i preferred the original series starring donnie yen with the less sensationalised story line. what stayed in my mind though wasn't the action so much as the portrayal of the love between ip man's character and his wife, which is the typical chinese display of love - through their responsibility and respect towards each other (never mind if this isn't accurate about ip man!) instead of outward emotional displays - the slight nuances like when ip man spends more time with his son after his wife chides him, instead of spending time fighting..or when he asks sammo hung's character if it is more important to complete the duel to prove himeself or to have dinner with his family. i thought that there was so much unannounced romance in the film. i don't if being married has something to do with this. you really appreciate and pay attention to alot of the practical things you do for each other and i appreciate this everyday display of love, more than blings or expensive things.
